Drafting my talk on week-one retention for a community builders meetup next month. Twenty minutes, one story, three numbers. I'm putting the outline in the comments as I go, and feedback is very welcome.
Questions. Leaving eight minutes for them. The questions are usually better than the talk.
Questions I'm expecting, with draft answers in the replies.
"Is this different for paid communities?" The numbers shift, the pattern doesn't. People still need a reply.
"Which tools do you use?" A spreadsheet and the platform's own data export. Nothing fancy.
"How long until we see results?" Usually one monthly cohort, so four to six weeks.
Rehearsals. Two dry runs before the day, at least one in front of someone who doesn't work in community.
First dry run is booked for Thursday, over a video call with a friend who teaches high school. She has promised to be brutal about the slides.
Practising with a timer is humbling. First full run: 27 minutes for a 20-minute slot.
Second run: 21 minutes. Getting there.
One more edit before I close the laptop: the greeter story now comes straight after the empty feed, before any numbers. People first, numbers second.
