Gears, zips and flowers: three pictures I keep for hard community days

Three close-up photos that remind me how communities actually work: routines that mesh, one-to-one connections and slow growth.

I keep a small folder of pictures on my desktop. Not inspirational quotes, just three close-ups that remind me how a community really works when I'm tempted to fix everything at once. They're attached below, and since a few of you asked about them on a call last week, here's the thinking behind each one.

The gears

No gear does anything on its own. Moderation, onboarding, events and announcements all have to mesh. If your welcome message points people to an events calendar that's been empty for a month, one gear is spinning freely and the whole thing stalls. When something feels off, I look for the place where two routines don't connect.

The zip

A zip joins two sides one tooth at a time. That's how newcomers and regulars come together: not through a big launch or a clever feature, but through one introduction, one reply, one "you two should talk" at a time. Skip a tooth and the zip splits further up. Skip the personal welcome and the new member drifts away a few weeks later.

The flower

You can't pull on a flower to make it grow faster. Communities have seasons. Some months are busy, some are quiet, and a quiet month is not a crisis. Water it, pull the weeds, give it light and be patient.

What do you keep around for the hard days? A photo, a note from a member, a line from a book? I'd love to hear about it in the comments.
