PHP: The Powerhouse Behind Web Evolution

Why this network still runs on PHP, and why I'm happy about it.

Every few months someone asks why this network runs on PHP when everything else seems to be going serverless. Fair question, and as the person who gets the alert when something breaks, I've thought about it more than most.

It has outlived the hype cycles

PHP has been around since the mid-90s. Plenty of languages and frameworks have arrived with fanfare since then and quietly faded. PHP kept changing instead. Typed properties, the match expression, named arguments and a JIT compiler all landed in recent releases, and the code I write today looks nothing like what I wrote fifteen years ago.

Boring hosting is a feature

Almost every host on the planet runs PHP with MySQL next to it. For a community platform that matters more than benchmark numbers. If someone wants to run their own network on a cheap VPS, they can, without learning a new deployment model first.

Somebody has always hit your bug before

When I run into something strange at midnight, someone has usually run into it years earlier and written it down. That shared memory is the most underrated part of open source.

UNA bets on PHP for the same reasons: proven, easy to host, still evolving. The new web and mobile apps we're working on will sit on top of it and talk to it through the API, so members get a modern front end while the core stays something thousands of developers already know how to run. That trade-off has aged well.
