Migrating an old forum to a modern community platform: lessons learned

If I had to pick one lesson: keep old URLs working. We redirected every thread to its new address and search traffic barely moved.

A few people asked by message how long the import took. The final run for twelve years of threads took about nine hours, after three rehearsal runs on a copy of the site.

We also converted the old forum tags into hashtags, so they still work in search.

On private messages: we didn't migrate them. Members could request an export of their old messages instead, and only a few dozen did.

Tim ran a similar migration last year. Tim, any tips?

One thing we underestimated: avatars. Half the old image links were broken.

Repeating the advice from my post because it mattered most: tell members early and often. We emailed three times before the switch and some people were still surprised on the day.

We ran the new site as a read-only beta for two weeks before switching.

Another lesson: test email notifications with real members before launch.

Good list. We did profiles first as well. It made attribution much simpler.

The hardest part for us was mapping old forum categories to new spaces. We merged about half of them, and members actually liked the simpler structure.

Also worth keeping a public changelog during the migration, so members can see what's done and what's still coming.

Short video walkthroughs worked better than long docs.

Next on our list is moving the old mailing list archive across. Same approach, much smaller job.
