Private or public spaces: when do you use which?

We're setting up a professional network and can't decide which spaces should be open to everyone. What's your rule of thumb?

Where we've landed for now: public for anything that helps people decide to join, private for anything where members need to speak openly. Does that hold up in your experience?

  That's a useful split. Many professional networks also keep peer groups private and publish a short monthly summary of their discussions for everyone else.
